Wadi Mujib is a gorge that enters the Dead Sea at 410 meters below sea level. The Mujib Reserve is the lowest nature reserve in the world, located in the mountainous landscape to the east of the Dead Sea. Here, you can hike Jordan’s Grand Canyon by jumping, abseiling, and floating. Its red walls are filled with running water that plunges through a 15-meter waterfall with beautiful views over the Dead Sea on your way as you hike on the Siq Trail.
As with all activities Jordan, being outdoors means lots of walking so you need your sunglasses, hat, sunblock, and comfortable walking shoes. The difference at the Wadi Mujib is that these need to be good water shoes.
After a week in the desert, you’ll especially enjoy a few days on the water at both the Red Sea and the Dead Sea. But for flat-out fun, our visit to Wadi Mujib our last day in Jordan whilst at the Dead Sea was exceptional. It’s an outdoor paradise with theme park quality natural waterfalls.
Unlike anything we’d experienced previously, hiking through a canyon of water from ankle deep to thigh deep in a matter of meters with an increased flow until, suddenly, you’re crossing a rope that warns you it’s time to swim!
Pro Tip: Take as little as possible beyond a bottle of water and enclose your phone in a waterproof case to take photos as you go.
As with most things in Jordan, this activity is not for the mobility impaired, but for those that can go, arrive at the Adventure Center early and hope the life vests aren’t gone … because when they are, you could have a several hours wait. No one enters Wadi Mujib without a life vest, so you’ll be waiting for someone to come out of the canyon, returning the vest.
Recognize that it’s no small thing to say this is one of the most fun things to do in Jordan. After meeting amazing people from the stonemasons to the beekeepers, extraordinary women who feed the country, the sites of Gadara, Jerash, Amman, Petra, Mount Nebo, Wadi Feynan, Wadi Rum, Aqaba, and the Dead Sea, Bethany Beyond the Jordan, Wadi Mujib is an Unmissable Stop on your Jordan itinerary.
