Duck Donuts, Nags Head

Located throughout the Outer Banks, we were impressed and amazed to walk into our local branch and find no display cases filled with doughnuts. You go to the register, place your order, and then can watch your doughnuts be made before your eyes. You will rarely find a fresher or more remarkable doughnut.
The doughnut dough is dropped from the device directly into the boiling oil. It fries for exactly the right amount of time and is dropped into a clean right bowl at the end of the conveyor belt.
The staff picks them up, up to twelve per box, look at the order, refer to the “cheat sheet” as needed to confirm they get the items exactly right, and then load your doughnuts right into a box which they turn to present to you with a great smile.
I think they know they’re making your day. I had the blueberry crumble and had expected it to be a filled doughnut. It’s not. It’s the cake doughnut with the blueberry across the top and the crumble over and around that. Get a spoon because you’ll have a mess but won’t want to miss every last bite. One colleague had the maple icing with chopped bacon doughnut and said it was the best she’s had. The other ordered four doughnuts, unable to make a choice, and started with the lemon icing covered doughnut with a strawberry drizzle. “Utterly delicious,” she declared with glee, then took a bite of her strawberry shortcake. A beatific smile crossed her face. After she finished, she asked if we have a microwave for the condo. We do. She knows she’ll really be enjoying her other doughnuts for breakfast tomorrow.
Other options include chocolate icing with rainbow sprinkles, glazed, cinnamon sugar, coffee cake, lemon icing with shredded coconut, vanilla icing with Oreo crumbles and hot fudge drizzle, cinnamon sugar with vanilla drizzle, glazed, vanilla icing with raspberry drizzle, and chocolate explosion, a chocolate icing with Oreo crumbles and hot fudge drizzle.
