Do you have enough souvenir mugs and t-shirts cluttering your house to turn over a new leaf? Might I suggest a new habit? Collect Christmas ornaments during your travels and you’ll soon have a holiday tree blessed with stories of great memories that your family will enjoy reliving each year.
On our trip to the Outer Banks (OBX), North Carolina, we stopped at the Christmas Mouse in search of the perfect ornament. We hit the jackpot. Enter to the smell of spicy cinnamon and the sound of holiday music and feel your spirits soar.
Many of the ornaments have a beach theme, as one may expect in a beach town. There are funny things you can add to your beach rental or home, like plaques or magnets, encouraging you to “Drink Like a Pirate Dance Like a Mermaid” or remind you that “The Beach IS calling.”
Yet it’s the row after row of Christmas trees, many themed, that circle the store on both levels that have you exclaiming over and over, “Wait, look at this one!”
In stock, they have globes and shells, sea turtles and bikini-clad starfish, career-oriented ornaments, and ones a world traveler would be proud to own.
For my family, we also niched down a little more on our ornaments, trying to have a themed ornament that allows for personalization with our names, place, and year. Debbie, who manned the register and was both patient and helpful with all of us, pointed me towards the display to the left of the register (as you enter), behind the initial display, where rows are dough-crafted ornaments are available for personalization.
She has two to six sharks to name for your loved ones, all with their own unique personality. Surfboards and flip flops called my name, and ultimately the surfboards won out. The most interesting ones may have been the marshmallows with the hot chocolate. How clever!
