On our recent press trip to Petra, Jordan, we stayed at the Petra Movenpick and saw the Petra Moon and Petra Guest House during our forays in and out of the archeological site of Petra. Each has its own advantages.
The Movenpick in Petra remains an ideal place to stay during your time around your Archeological Site visit, the number one visitor destination in Jordan. With 183 rooms on 4 stories, you may be lucky to have some choice in your room. I stayed in room 157 (that’s the one on the second level with the grate in the front right side of the photo) and found that I was either awakened each day by the street noise or found it impossible to go to sleep – fair warning.
Room 157 contains two beds slightly larger than a twin but not as large as a double, with 3/4 washroom, desk and flat screen TV, a nice size closet with a safe and a small refrigerator (their “mini-bar” consisted of four small cans of soda)
The tea stand was set above a few drawers in a nice niche – my plug didn’t fit so I moved it to my bedside table and quickly learned the convenience of having tea so easily accessible. I used the flexibility to have my cuppa while I read in bed without the extra up and outs…
In addition to the rooms, the lobby restaurant – the buffet style for most of us – the luxury restaurant for those who wanted a fine dining experience, the chocolate hour (4 to 5 pm when we were there in October) and the Spa and swimming pool we had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay. And there were shops on the far side of the lobby we never even explored.
And, of course, the location – there’s the Petra Guest House and Moon Bar (I was told it’s a hostel, but find no evidence of that on its website) within the Visitor Center gates, just outside the entrance to the Siq, but otherwise, the Movenpick is the closest hotel to the entrance of the Petra Archeological site. The Petra Moon hotel
was about a block above the Movenpick and advertises its soundproof rooms.
