Jennette’s Pier

When staying on the beach, as we did this month at the Whalebone Oceanside Cottages, it’s just a short walk north up the beach to Jennette’s Pier, the longest pier in the region at 1,000 feet. Part of the fun is just getting there. It’s a quick walk up and over the boardwalk across the sand dunes to the wide white sand beaches of the Atlantic Ocean. Of course, during my journey, we experienced the tail end of the nor’easter, and it was our last day before the sun finally shone. That made it that much more delectable to finally see the expanse and depth of available things to do on the pier.
A division of the North Carolina Aquariums, Jennette’s Pier reopened in 2011 and is THE place to be in Nags Head during the summer season. Hundreds of thousands of visitors travel to see the large aquariums and educational exhibits in addition to utilizing the facilities. If you need gear to fish, you need to look no further than the pier’s tackle and gift shop for different types of rod and reel combos, bait, and tackle and all the snacks you’ll need until you catch your next meal.
If you don’t already have your North Carolina fishing license, the pier staff can sell you a daily fishing pass, a three-day pass, or a seven-day pass. Children pay half off on passes. There is a charge to walk on the pier.
Anglers might catch black drum, big red drum, sea mullets, spots, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, trout, cobia, croaker, mahi-mahi, flounder, spadefish or sheepshead fish. Sightseers watch pelicans scan the water for their next meal or, at the end of the pier, bottlenose dolphins swimming in the ocean.
Jennette’s averages 8,000 to 10,000 student educational visits per (non-pandemic) year for field trips or summer camps. Whether you’re interested in Fishing 101 or their conservation work for marine mammals, the “surfside classroom” never lets you forget you’re at the ocean.
It’s a public fishing pier, with plenty of free parking if you’re not staying nearby, right across the street from local favorite Sam & Omie’s one of the best breakfast spots for locals.
The pier allows for public and private functions, from the oceanfront reception hall to the tip of the pier. The public bathhouse, complete with showers, makes it possible to go from the beach to one of the many restaurants in the area. Some of our favorites were the Kill Devil Grill and Sal’s New York Pizzeria.
