South of Nags Head, North Carolina, the 156-foot Bodie Island Lighthouse with its black and white horizontal stripes retains the National Register of Historic Places status as it protects ships from dangerous shoals. On May 26th, 2022, the United States National Parks Service celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Outer Banks, North Carolina’s current Bodie Lighthouse commemoration. Its construction began in 1871 and it first shone its light 19 miles over the ocean on October 1st, 1872. This key light reduced the “dark spot” from Cape Hatteras to Currituck Beach and allowed mariners to maneuver past.

The Bodie Light, as it’s known, pronounced “body,” re-opened for the climbing season on Wednesday, April 27th. Climbing tickets are sold on the same day as your intended visit starting at 7 a.m. for Wednesday through Saturday climbs. The end date for the 2022 climbing season has not been set at the time of this writing.
