Many people make New Year’s resolutions. I make resolutions every year. This year, after the past two chaotic travel years, I’ve decided to make New Year Travel Resolutions. My goal is to set up the anticipation that is such a fun and valuable part of the trip. When I have something to look forward to, I can get through the tougher times at home or work.

And, I’ve learned, that without making resolutions, without actually setting my goals down in writing – it’s easy to come up with a reason to not accomplish things. Whether it’s money or time or allowing someone else’s needs to come first, I’m not nearly as likely to resolve to fulfil my goals without actually knowing what they are.

So here are my 5 tips to help you set your travel resolution goals for the coming year.

1. Set your personal goals
Would you like to visit one new state? A new country?

I’ve been to all 50 U.S. states, 2 Australian states, 8 Dublin Counties, and 27 countries, and still like to try out at least one new place a year. This year, it was Belize. Next year … I’m going on a Tanzania Safari for my birthday and thinking Trinidad or Tobago. And a River cruise. I hope to go on an ocean cruise, but I’m waiting to see how the initial cruises go.

Based on the number of vacation days you have, determine how much time you have to how many places you must go and start dreaming of where you want to travel next!

Dream big. If you shoot for the moon and fall short, you’ll still be amongst the stars.
